The Budget workspace (under Plan) compares what you planned to spend per category against what actually happened, month by month.
Setting up a budget
Create a budget for a month and set planned amounts per category. Categories come from your category list (see Categories and Payees) — income categories count toward planned income, expense categories toward planned spending.
Reading the numbers
Each category line shows planned, actual, and remaining. Actuals come from your categorized transactions in the period. An over-budget category is flagged — and shows up on the dashboard's Needs Attention panel, because a budget you have to remember to check isn't doing its job.
Crypto purchases are not “spending”
Buying $500 of Bitcoin moves money from cash into an asset you still own. Counting it as consumption would make an ordinary month look catastrophic, so transactions categorized as crypto purchases are excluded from actual spending and reported separately on the budget screen. The same logic applies in spending reports.
Selecting a line
Select any budget line to see its detail in the Inspector — planned vs. actual and the transactions behind the actual figure.
