Reconciliation is the discipline that keeps a ledger honest: check what the application holds against what the bank's statement says, transaction by transaction, until the balances agree.
Starting a reconciliation
Open the account and use Reconcile (also available from the account's context menu in the left-hand tree). Enter the statement's ending date and ending balance from your paper or PDF statement.
Working the statement
Match each statement line against the ledger. Select any transaction to inspect its details — including import evidence when you need to know where a number came from. Transactions confirmed against the statement are marked reconciled.
When it doesn't balance
A mismatch means one of a small set of things: a transaction missing from the ledger (import the covering statement), a transaction missing from the bank statement (usually timing), an amount differing (check the evidence), or a duplicate. The reconciliation view is built to make the difference visible rather than leaving you to eyeball two long lists.
Reconciliation status is protected
Re-imports never clear a transaction's reconciled status. Once you've confirmed a transaction against a real statement, that fact is yours — the application treats it as one of the edits an import may never overwrite.
