Free Trial and Licensing
Last updated: April 2026
Free Trial
RockTerm offers a free trial through the Microsoft Store. The trial is fully functional with no feature limitations, no watermarks, and no connection restrictions. Every feature available in the purchased version is available during the trial, including AI-assisted terminal features.
The trial period is defined in the Microsoft Store listing. When the trial expires, RockTerm will prompt you to purchase a license. Your saved connections, settings, and preferences are preserved when you transition from the trial to the purchased version.
To start the trial, open the Microsoft Store, search for RockTerm, and click Free Trial. See the Microsoft Store Installation article for detailed instructions.
Purchasing a License
RockTerm is a one-time purchase through the Microsoft Store. There is no subscription, no recurring fee, and no annual renewal. You pay once and receive the application along with all future updates at no additional cost.
To purchase:
- Open the Microsoft Store and search for RockTerm.
- Click the price button (or Buy).
- Complete the purchase using any payment method accepted by the Microsoft Store (credit card, debit card, PayPal, Microsoft account balance, gift cards).
If you started with a free trial, you can purchase at any time during or after the trial period from the same Store listing.
License Scope
Your RockTerm license is tied to your Microsoft account, not to a specific device. This means:
- Install on multiple devices. You can install and use RockTerm on any Windows 10 or Windows 11 device where you are signed in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase. There is no device limit imposed by Rock River Research; the Microsoft Store's standard licensing terms apply.
- Reinstall freely. If you reinstall Windows, replace hardware, or set up a new machine, simply sign in to the Microsoft Store with the same account and install RockTerm from your Library. You will not be charged again.
- Not transferable. The license cannot be transferred to a different Microsoft account. It is bound to the account that completed the purchase.
Commercial Use
Commercial use of RockTerm is permitted. You may use RockTerm for any purpose, including professional, enterprise, and commercial work, without purchasing a separate commercial license. The same one-time purchase covers personal and commercial use.
For bulk deployments across an organization, consider using the Microsoft Store for Business or Microsoft Intune to manage license distribution and installation across multiple user accounts.
AI Feature Costs
RockTerm's AI-assisted terminal features (command suggestions, output analysis, natural language queries) support two providers: Anthropic Claude and OpenAI GPT. You choose which provider to use and supply your own API key in Edit → Preferences → AI Assistant.
Key points about AI costs:
- Billed separately by your chosen provider. AI usage is billed directly by Anthropic or OpenAI to your account with that provider. Rock River Research does not charge for AI usage, does not proxy API calls, and does not mark up either provider's pricing.
- You control costs. Set spending limits and usage alerts in your provider's dashboard — console.anthropic.com for Anthropic, or platform.openai.com/usage for OpenAI.
- AI features are optional. RockTerm is a fully functional terminal emulator without a provider configured. The AI features are an enhancement, not a requirement. If you do not configure a provider, no AI requests are ever made.
- API key security. Your API key is stored locally on your device and is never transmitted to Rock River Research servers. It is only sent directly to the provider's API endpoint (
api.anthropic.comorapi.openai.com) when you use AI features.
For current API pricing, visit anthropic.com/pricing or openai.com/pricing.
