RockWiFi Pro is designed to work without administrator privileges for the complete survey and diagnostic workflow. This article explains what the app can access at standard user level and the rare scenarios that might require elevation.
No Admin Privileges Required for Normal Use
RockWiFi Pro uses the standard Windows WLAN API (wlanapi.dll) for Wi-Fi scanning. This is the same API that Windows itself uses to display available networks in the system tray. No elevation is needed.
What Works Without Admin
- Viewing your current Wi-Fi connection details
- Scanning for nearby access points (SSID, signal, channel, band, security)
- Reading BSS Information Elements (Wi-Fi standard, channel width, max rate, station count, utilization, RSN details, MLO, country code)
- All network diagnostics (Connection Check, Target Test, DNS Compare, Latency Monitor)
- Wi-Fi surveys and heatmaps
- All reporting and export features
What Might Need Admin
The following advanced operations are not required for normal use but may require elevation in certain scenarios:
- Raw packet capture (advanced feature, not part of the standard workflow)
- Modifying network adapter settings directly
- Some advanced ICMP operations on certain Windows configurations
Enterprise Environments
In managed environments with Group Policy restrictions, your IT department may restrict WLAN API access. If scans return empty results on a domain-joined machine, check with your IT team about WLAN policy settings. Common restrictions include:
- Policies that disable the WLAN AutoConfig service
- Restrictions on which applications can call WLAN APIs
- Network adapter access controls
Microsoft Store and Permissions
Installing RockWiFi Pro from the Microsoft Store uses standard user permissions. The app runs in a normal user context and does not request admin privileges on launch. No UAC prompt should appear during normal operation.

- If you are scanning a client's environment, a standard user account works in most cases.
- The app is designed so the complete survey and diagnostic workflow runs without elevation.
