What Is Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7, based on the IEEE 802.11be standard ratified in 2024, is the latest generation of wireless networking. It builds on the efficiency improvements of Wi-Fi 6 and adds capabilities designed for ultra-high throughput and low-latency applications:
- Maximum throughput increases to 46 Gbps (theoretical), up from Wi-Fi 6's 9.6 Gbps.
- 320 MHz channels double the maximum channel width, providing substantially more bandwidth per radio.
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO) allows devices to transmit and receive across multiple bands simultaneously.
- 4096-QAM packs 20% more data per symbol compared to Wi-Fi 6's 1024-QAM.
- Preamble puncturing allows use of a wide channel even when a portion of it is occupied, reducing wasted spectrum.
For enterprise and managed networks, Wi-Fi 7 addresses the growing demand from video conferencing, cloud applications, AR/VR, and high-density environments where airtime is at a premium.
Key Wi-Fi 7 Features RockWiFi Pro Detects
320 MHz Channels
Wi-Fi 7 doubles the maximum channel width from 160 MHz (Wi-Fi 6) to 320 MHz, available exclusively in the 6 GHz band where sufficient contiguous spectrum exists. A 320 MHz channel provides roughly double the throughput capacity of a 160 MHz channel under the same conditions.
RockWiFi Pro displays channel width throughout the app. When a 320 MHz channel is detected, it is prominently shown in UltraScan tiles, the Dashboard connection card, Signal Strip, AP Locator, and Connection Check. The 6 GHz spectrum chart in the Congestion Panel visualizes these wide channels, making it immediately clear how much of the available spectrum each AP occupies.
Multi-Link Operation (MLO)
MLO is the signature feature of Wi-Fi 7. It enables a device to maintain simultaneous connections across multiple bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) to the same AP. This delivers lower latency (traffic can be steered to the least congested band in real time), higher aggregate throughput, and more resilient connections.
RockWiFi Pro detects MLO from the Multi-Link Information Element in BSS scan data. When an AP advertises MLO capability, RockWiFi Pro displays an "MLO" badge in the following locations:
- UltraScan tiles — MLO badge appears next to the standard indicator.
- Dashboard — The connected AP card shows MLO status.
- Signal Strip — MLO-capable APs are marked in the AP list.
- AP Locator — MLO status is shown alongside other target AP metrics.
- Health Check — MLO availability is factored into the connection assessment.
- Reports — MLO-capable APs are identified in UltraScan HTML and PDF reports.
4096-QAM
Wi-Fi 7 introduces 4096-QAM (12-bit), which increases the data rate per symbol by approximately 20% over Wi-Fi 6's 1024-QAM (10-bit). This requires a very clean RF environment with high signal-to-noise ratio, so the benefit is most pronounced at close range.
RockWiFi Pro reflects the higher modulation in the max PHY rate displayed for Wi-Fi 7 APs. When comparing APs in UltraScan or reports, the higher max rate of Wi-Fi 7 APs relative to similarly configured Wi-Fi 6 APs is largely due to 4096-QAM.
The 6 GHz Band
The 6 GHz band (5925–7125 MHz) provides 1200 MHz of new spectrum — more than doubling the usable Wi-Fi spectrum that was previously available in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz combined. Only Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices can operate in this band, which means zero interference from legacy devices.
UNII Bands
The 6 GHz spectrum is divided into four UNII (Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure) sub-bands:

6 GHz in RockWiFi Pro
- No legacy interference — Because only Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices can use the 6 GHz band, the congestion landscape is fundamentally different from 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This makes 6 GHz ideal for high-density deployments.
- Congestion Panel spectrum chart — RockWiFi Pro includes a dedicated 6 GHz spectrum chart in the Congestion Panel. UNII band boundaries are shown as shaded regions so you can see at a glance which sub-bands have active APs and how channels are distributed across the available spectrum.
- Channel recommendations — The findings engine provides channel recommendations specific to the 6 GHz band, taking into account the wider channels available and the current utilization across UNII-5 through UNII-8.
Wi-Fi 7 Readiness in Reports
RockWiFi Pro's findings engine produces specific findings related to Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz readiness:
- "Wi-Fi 7 upgrade opportunity" — Generated when a site's APs are Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 and could benefit from Wi-Fi 7 features. The finding explains the practical advantages based on the environment (e.g., high station counts that would benefit from MLO, congested channels that would benefit from 320 MHz in the 6 GHz band).
- "Partial Wi-Fi 7 deployment" — Generated when some APs at a site are Wi-Fi 7 but others are not. This helps identify incomplete rollouts where users may have inconsistent experiences.
- "6 GHz band not in use" — Generated when Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 capable APs are detected but no 6 GHz radios are active. This flags an opportunity to enable the 6 GHz band and take advantage of the clean spectrum.
- "MLO detected" — A positive finding confirming that MLO-capable APs are present and advertising multi-link capability.
UltraScan HTML reports include a "Wi-Fi 7 Features" summary card that aggregates Wi-Fi 7 specific data: number of Wi-Fi 7 APs, MLO-capable APs, 320 MHz channel usage, and 6 GHz band utilization. This provides a single at-a-glance view of next-generation readiness that you can share directly with clients.
Backward Compatibility
Wi-Fi 7 APs are fully backward compatible with all previous Wi-Fi generations. A Wi-Fi 7 AP will serve Wi-Fi 4, 5, and 6 clients on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while offering full Wi-Fi 7 capabilities to compatible clients. RockWiFi Pro's standard detection shows you the exact generational mix — so you can see that an AP is Wi-Fi 7 capable even when most of its connected clients are using older standards.
This is especially useful during phased rollouts: you can verify that new Wi-Fi 7 APs are in place and advertising the expected capabilities while your client fleet gradually upgrades.
